Dearest friend, now you face no enemies but the ones you have taken with you: your own sins and the evil inclinations of your heart. Let all your enemies be confounded and wither away. To you I say: The blessing of the Lord be upon you: I have blessed you in the name of the Lord, and will bless you again. And may many blessings of angels and saints descend on your head.

On the day that you died, I mentioned that it was the Feast of Saint Athanasius, a doctor of the Church. You will be buried on the feast day of Saint Basil, another doctor. May these two noble and exalted teachers pray for you, my humble friend, that God will illuminate your mind with divine knowledge, so that you may apprehend the beauty and justice of God's plan for you, which has so wonderfully interwoven the actions that come from His perfect will with the varied acts that sprang from our very imperfect wills.

The gift of Knowledge enables the soul to evaluate created things at their true worth - in their relation to God. Knowledge unmasks the pretence of creatures, reveals their emptiness, and points out their only true purpose as instruments in the service of God. It shows us the loving care of God even in adversity, and directs us to glorify Him in every circumstance of life.
